Realistic Basculin

Latin name: Betta basculinus
Status: Locally common.
Diet: Small fish and invertebrates.
Distribution: Borneo.

This newly discovered species of betta lives in the tropical rivers of Borneo and exist in one red (ssp. rubra) and a blue (ssp. caeruleus) subspecies. They have quickly become popular aquarium fish, and breed with relative ease in captivity.
Scientists have discovered that a red basculin will immedietely attack and kill any blue subspecies in their way, and vice versa. The reason for this agression is not yet understood, but it has lead to a clear distinction between the distribution of the different subspecies.
Not much is known about this fish yet, they seem to be locally aboundant but like all animals and plants living on Borneo they are facing the threat of habitat destruction. The basculin is also considered to be a very tasty fish, and is regulary eaten by the locals.
